Prayer for James 4

Praying through James 4:1

Heavenly Father, thank You that 'in-Christ' I have the sufficient grace and power through Him to overcome the lust of the flesh and the pride of life. Thank You that Your grace is sufficient for all my needs, for my sufficiency is in Christ alone. Thank You in Jesus' name, AMEN.

“From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?”

Praying through James 4:2

Loving Father I do want to pray aright and to pray into Your perfect will. Keep me, I pray, from such covetous thoughts that anchor me to this world, which I know have nothing to offer, but rather help me to focus my eyes on You and keep my ears ever open to Your voice so that I may pray in spirit and truth and proclaim, "Thy will be done." In Jesus' name I pray, AMEN.

“Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.”

Praying through James 4:4

Heavenly Father, I confess that I am too easily drawn into thinking and acting in a worldly way which I know grieves the Holy Spirit. Help me not to be drawn away into friendship with the world which keeps me far away from You. Draw me close to You, Lord, and as I gaze into Your eyes, may the attraction of the world fade away as You become my all in all. In Jesus' name, AMEN.

“Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.”

Praying through James 4:5

Heavenly Father, thank You for the amazing privilege of the indwelling Holy Spirit Who desires us to be holy. Keep me from engaging in strife and acrimony and help me never to foster carnal attitudes or crave after the things of this world. Help me to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness. May I truly die to my own desires and jealously live for Your praise and glory. In Jesus' name, AMEN.

“Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?”

Praying through James 4:6

Loving Father, thank You for the great grace that You show to me every day of my life. I pray that I would heed Your serious warnings against prideful boastings and not yield to any ungodly ways. Rather, may I come to You on bended knee with a broken and contrite heart. In Jesus' name, AMEN.

“But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.”

Praying through James 4:7

Thank You, Heavenly Father, that I am no longer under the domain of Satan but am a child of God who is under grace and not under the Law. I pray that I may walk in spirit and truth to Your praise and honour. In Your power, I pray that I will resist the influences of the world, the flesh, and the devil. Help me to walk in meekness, purity, spirituality, and sincerity all the days of my life, to Your praise and glory. In Jesus' name, AMEN.

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

Praying through James 4:8

Loving Father, I want to develop a singleness of mind towards You, with my heart purified and my hands clean before You so that I can draw closer and closer to Christ, my Saviour, and Lord. Keep my ears open to Your voice, my eyes open to Your truth, and my heart open to You alone. In Jesus' name I pray, AMEN.

“Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.”

Praying through James 4:9

Heavenly Father, thank You for the wise instruction to live godly and victorious lives, in the book of James. Help me surrender my life and maintain sweet fellowship with You. Purify my heart and keep me from double-mindedness. May I hate sin in all its ugly guises and mourn over the things that dishonour Your holy name. Keep me low at the Cross and I pray that I would humble my heart before you daily. In Jesus' name, AMEN.

“Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.”

Praying through James 4:10

Heavenly Father, thank You that You have so clearly set out the criteria for Your children to humble ourselves before Your throne of grace. Thank You for the promise that when I am ready and willing to humble myself before You, then in Your grace You will lift me up and set my feet on the Rock of my salvation. Keep my heart humble before You and my eyes fixed on You. In Jesus' name, AMEN.

“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.”

Praying through James 4:11

Heavenly Father, I pray that I may become a doer of Your holy law and not fall into the foolish trap of judging it, by condemning the actions of others. Lord, You alone can judge the thoughts of the heart and I have no right to condemn others, through my own self-righteous attitude. Keep me humble before you and help me become an encouragement to my brothers and sisters in Christ, and not their accuser. Keep me from being 'wise in my own conceit', or making arbitrary assumptions about the motives of others and above all, teach me to love others as Christ loved me, for in so doing I will honour Your name, as Christ lives in and through me. In His precious name I pray, AMEN.

“Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.”

Praying through James 4:14

Heavenly Father, it is easy to get caught up in the joys and cares of this life. Help me remember how fragile my life is and how short my time on earth is, in relation to eternity. Help me to live my life with an eternal perspective, knowing that You have my life in Your hands, and You do know what tomorrow will bring. May I take to heart the words of this precious old poem: "Only one life 'twill soon be past. Only what's done for Christ will last." Thank You, Lord. In Jesus' name, AMEN.

“Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.”

Praying through James 4:15

Heavenly Father, I do not want to live my life apart from You. I surrender my life into Your hands, knowing that You care for me. Thank You that nothing can stop Your perfect will from being done as You unfold Your plan of redemption from eternity past unto its perfect completion. I pray that Your will be done in my life each day, until I see You face to face. In Jesus' name, AMEN.

“For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.”

Praying through James 4:17

Heavenly Father, thank You for this truth in the book of James that when I know what is righteous and yet do not do it, I am committing a sin in Your eyes. Forgive me for the times when I have known that something is evil but done it anyway, when I have avoided doing what is right, or when I have turned a blind eye to some need or necessity. I pray that from this day forward, I would not only know what is right but be ready and willing to carry it out, through Your sufficient strength and for Your greater glory. This I ask in Jesus' name, AMEN.

“Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.”
