Prayer for 1 John 4

Praying through 1 John 4:1

Heavenly Father, I pray that I may take this warning seriously and test all the teachings and doctrines I come across against the plumb-line of Your Word of truth. Give me discernment, I pray, and help me to focus my heart and mind on Christ and abide in Him so that I may not be swayed by lying spirits and false teachings. This I ask in Jesus' name, AMEN.

“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.”

Praying through 1 John 4:2

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You that You sent the lovely Lord Jesus to be born in the flesh so that He could die for my sin. Thank You that He was willing to be born into the human race, and shed His life-blood so that I might live in Him. Give me the wisdom and insight to discern the truth, and not to be led astray by apostate teachers or heretics. May I feed on You in my heart, by faith, with thanksgiving and praise. Protect my mind from all false teachings, and may I grow in grace and in a knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ, in Whose name I pray, AMEN.

“Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:”

Praying through 1 John 4:3

Heavenly Father, thank You for the Word of God and the truth it contains. Thank You that Jesus is my Lord and Saviour. He is the incarnate Word of God Who came from heaven as my sin-substitute and Kinsman-Redeemer. Thank You for the many warnings in Your Word about false teachings that diminish the Person and work of Christ Jesus. Help me to be diligent in my study of Scripture and give me discernment to identify and denounce every spirit of antichrist that seeks to influence my faith in Christ. Give me a teachable spirit, I pray, and guide me into all truth. Guard the hearts and minds of vulnerable believers who have opened their minds to any spirit of antichrist and help them to recognise the folly of their way and return to the Word of truth. In Jesus' name, AMEN.

“And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.”

Praying through 1 John 4:4

Thank You, Father, that I am Your child, and thank You for the wonderful gift of Your Holy Spirit, Who is living within my body to lead and guide and protect me. Thank You that no power in heaven or hell can match His greatness. Thank You that by faith in Christ, I have overcome the enemies that seek my downfall and the downfall of those I love. Help me withstand all forms of evil and to submit to You in all things. Give me the wisdom to resist Satan's wiles, and flood my heart with Your perfect peace that passes understanding. Help me, Father, to listen more earnestly to Your still, small voice, and to remember that greater is HE that is living in me than the defeated enemy that is in the world. This I ask in Jesus' name, AMEN.

“Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”

Praying through 1 John 4:5

Heavenly Father, help me to understand the truth that I am in the world but not of the world. May I not get discouraged when the world seems to love its own but hates me. Keep me from any form of worldly philosophy or from trying to please those in the world. May I never yearn for affection or adoration from the world, but may I set my mind on Christ Who loves me with an everlasting love. In Jesus' name, AMEN.

“They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.”

Praying through 1 John 4:6

Heavenly Father, thank You that I am born of God and greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world. Help me to listen to the gentle promptings and wise correction of the Holy Spirit and give me discernment to recognise any spirit of error. Help me always to have an answer ready for the hope that is in me and give me wisdom to know when to speak and when to remain silent. This I ask in Jesus' name, AMEN.

“We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.”

Praying through 1 John 4:7

Loving Father, I can only love others with Your love, for of myself my love is so limited. Pour forth Your love into my heart so that the love of Jesus streams out from me as rivers of His living water. I pray that through me, Your love would bless those around me. In Jesus' name, AMEN.

“Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.”

Praying through 1 John 4:8

Heavenly Father, thank You that You loved the world so much that You gave Your unique and incomparable Son as the substitute for my sin and for the sin of the world. I pray that I may walk in spirit and truth and show forth Your love in my life for the benefit of others. I pray that I may decrease and that You may increase in every area of my life, until I become a transparent conduit through whom Your divine love flows to others, to Your praise and glory. In Jesus' name I pray, AMEN.

Loving Father, I praise You for Your heart of love that is open towards me, and for the many ways that You shower Your love into my life. Keep me ever mindful of Your never-failing love and ever-abiding presence in my heart. Use me I pray, to stream Your gracious love through my life and out to the weary and thirsty souls that You place in my path. This I ask in Christ's name and for His greater glory, AMEN.

Praying through 1 John 4:18

Heavenly Father, I pray that I would let these sweet words of truth settle in my heart. There are times in my life when I am very fearful. I know that when I am fearing things in life, I am not exhibiting trust in You. I pray that You would surround me in Your perfect love, where fear has no place to stay and has to be cast out. As I rest in Your love, I pray that I would experience the peace the passes understanding, whatever situation of life I am in. And as I come to a deeper realisation of the depth of Your superlative love for me, may I be used by You to love as I am loved. In Jesus’ name, AMEN.

“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.”

Praying through 1 John 4:19

Father, when I think of the depth of Your love for me, I am overwhelmed. I cannot love as You love, unless You pour Your supernatural love through me, so that it may flow through me and out to others. Thank You that I am being conformed into the likeness of Christ. May the seed of love that You have planted within my heart, blossom into a godly love. Take my life as a vessel through whom Your love is shed abroad into a world where real love has been corrupted. I love You, Jesus, and I pray in Your precious name, AMEN.

“We love him, because he first loved us.”

Praying through 1 John 4:20

Heavenly Father, thank You for the wonderful writings of the apostle John, the glorious truths that they contain, and the many lessons that I can learn. I pray that in the power of Your Holy Spirit, I may walk in spirit and truth, grow in grace and wisdom, and love others with the same supernatural, divine love that Christ loves me. This I ask in Jesus' name, AMEN.

“If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?”

Praying through 1 John 4:21

Heavenly Father, I long to walk in spirit and truth and to keep my old sin nature nailed to the Cross. I pray that in the power of Your Spirit, I would die to self and so live for Christ that I am able to say with Paul: "It is not I that live, but Christ that lives in me," so that I may obey Your command to love my brothers and sisters as Christ loved the Church and gave Himself for her. This I ask in Jesus' name, AMEN.

“And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.”
